Global Ambassadors, all over...
Yes yes...it´s all done. As i am writing these words my crew is packing their bags, clearing out their rooms and we are about to head to the airport. The trip, the experience and indeed the research results have far surpassed our expectations. This years delegation was a great one and once again, friendships have been formed that will last well into the future. It is our sincere hope that these kinds of opportunities, friendships, new experiences, new insights will be seized upon in order continue on...traveling, learning...because this world belongs to the young people. Those who will have to live with and bear the brunt of our mistakes. We have a lot of things to sort through. Pictures, videos and research results and we will make those publicly available in the near future.
This years visit to NYC has been amazing and beautiful. At the same time it has been strange and somewhat worrisome. Something has changed and it´s becoming ever more clear with each day that goes by. What makes an 83 year old man loudly proclaim that “Trump is gonna throw the monkeys out” while standing right near me? What makes an American sailor walking by a group of British tourists in Brooklyn ask the “white girl” in the group what she is doing with “all of those darky´s over there”? Some people seem to have found a renewed sense of entitlement now that the “anti-political establishment candidate” has won and they intend to cash in their chips. Reactions reach from those who take the fight right to Trump Tower to those (and there are way too many in my opinion) who get into their “let´s wait and see” stands...maybe “he won´t be so bad”...well, he will be and then some! As we get ready to leave NYC we can´t help but wonder...what will happen to some of our Global Ambassadors and their families from NYC and the hundreds of thousands of other black and brown families in NYC and beyond?
So we leave with mixed feelings. With new funding opportunities for the future of the project but big question marks. Will the project even be able to continue under the incoming administration?
Enough, this years group has been a wonderful bunch and i am very glad and honored to have been on this journey with you all...
Ja es ist tatsächlich vorbei. Während ich diese Zeilen schreibe packt meine Crew ihre Sachen zusammen, macht ihre Zimmer sauber und in Kürze machen wir uns auf den Weg zum Flughafen. Die Reise, die Erfahrungen und die Forschungsergebnisse haben das Erwartete weit übertroffen. Die diesjährige Delegation war eine tolle Gruppe und wieder haben sich Freundschaften entwickelt die weit in die Zukunft reichen werden. Es ist unsere große Hoffnung das diese neuen Chancen, neue Freundschaften, neue Erfahrungen, neue Perspektiven...wahrgenommen werden um weiter zu Lernen, weiter zu Reisen...denn diese Welt gehört den jungen Menschen. Die, die mit den Konsequenzen unserer Fehler leben müssen. Wir haben eine Menge Dinge auszuwerten. Bilder, Videos, Ergebnisse...und wir werden diese Zeitnah öffentlich zugänglich machen.
Der diesjährige Besuch in NYC war toll und schön. Gleichzeitig war es aber auch seltsam und besorgniserregend. Etwas hat sich verändert und mit jedem Tag wird es ein kleines bisschen deutlicher. Was bringt einen 83 Jährigen Mann dazu laut zu verkunden das Trump die „Affen rausschmeissen wird“ während er direkt neben mir steht. Warum wagt ein Amerikanischer Matrose es an einer Gruppe britischer Touristen in Brooklyn vorbei zu gehen und die Weiße aus der Gruppe zu fragen warum sie „mit so vielen Darky´s rumhängt“? Einige Menschen denken, dass sie es wagen können nun, da der Anti-Politsche Correctness Kandidat gewonnen hat, wieder Dinge von sich zu geben die in den letzten Jahrzehnten tabu waren (und wie wir alle wissen ist das ja nur der Anfang). Reaktionen reichen von denen die den Fight direkt vor den Trump Tower tragen bis zu den vielen (zu viele meiner Meinung nach) die eine Wartungshaltung eingenommen haben und sagen „vielleicht wird er ja gar nicht so schlimm...Während wir NY verlassen müssen wir uns Fragen, was wird mit einigen der Global Ambassadors und ihren Familien und den 100 Tausenden anderen black and brown Familien in NYC und darüber hinaus passieren?
So gehen wir mit gemischten Gefühlen. Mit neuen Fördermöglichkeiten für das Projekt und vielen Fragezeichen. Kann das Projekt überhaupt weitergehen unter der neuen Regierung?
Genug, die diesjährige Gruppe war wunderbar und ich bin sehr stolz mit euch unterwegs gewesen zu sein...
