Be-troit, the project, the idea
The cities of Berlin and Detroit are full of amazing artists. Very much in the same way in which Berlin was regarded as the subcultural capitol of the world some 15 or 20 years ago, when artists were flocking to it because of affordable space, bringing with them an incredible energy and of course many talents and abilities, you can feel a certain kind of energy when you travel to Detroit these days. It is rough and at the same time interesting and beautiful. Grimy and at the same time elegant and free. It is a place where devastation is still visible and along side of it there are opportunities. Opportunities for artists, activists and resistance movements to help turn the city into the magnificent place it could be in order to make things better for all of its residents. The newly elected president of the Unites States likes to paint things with broad brushes. When it comes to African Americans and African American communities he uses perhaps the biggest one of them all. „American carnage“, „gang members“, „crime“, his administration reduces us using negative code words which could easily be translated by using the other, less politically correct words of the past which he so obviously longs for. Be-troit is one in a long line of projects which would beg to differ. It wants to show what can emerge when you bring artists from all kinds of communities and backgrounds together in order to embark on cross cultural, artistic fertilisation in order to make babies called poems, songs, beats and rhymes.
From Sept 11 .- Sept 20 2016 artists from Berlin and Detroit, poets, emcees, singer/songwriters, beat producers, came together in Detroit in order to get to know one another and to create. In June of this year we will get back together, this time in Berlin. There, we will share the album and the documentary we were able to shoot on location last year.
From June 4- June 11 we will present concerts, poetry readings, workshops and much more. The entire schedule as well as the trailer and snippet mashups from the upcoming album will be posted on our website later this spring.
#Be-troit is coming to Berlin and we look forward to seeing you all soon…
