I am back....

I am back....

...back in that place, back in that city where random strangers won´t think twice before telling you some of their most intimate stories simply because they  feel like it ,while there is a very strong possibility that they won´t have the faintest idea who you are the very next time your paths cross, which let´s face it is pretty unlikely in this jungle of a city...I am back in the city where people wear flip flops in pretty much any weather and/or situation, where your surrounded by masses and where people only sporadically look up from their cell phones, e-readers and I Pads to make sure no weirdo´s are staring at them any longer than they should...the city where you at once feel great by the multi-culturral sea of faces on the train while also feeling guilty, wondering what might happen to that homeless lady passed out on the bench that no one pays any attention to besides the occasional asshole who does´t do anything to help either but writes about it in some blog post no more than 10 people will ever read...the city where trendy bars full of happy people function as a windshield for the homeless guy making up his cardboard box for the night...i am back in that city i always want to be but never want to live in...that city where live is so exciting and at the same so fucking hard...and while the election of NY´s own Donald Trump has already turned to be the most incredible embarrassment in my life time it has at least given me a reason to come back here earlier than originally planned as we, the Goethe Institut NY, the Goethe Institut Chicago, the Guttman Community College and Gangwway e.V. are forging big plans for the coming years, plans that have been significantly altered by the populism that has washed over us all like some big wave of bullshit and plans that we will be very happy to announce once they have been finalised....for the next few days my life will consist of meetings and photography....and bagels, lots of bagels....

Street Work, social justice issues, alternative education, art and cultural projects...so much has happened since coming to Berlin in 2003...NYC, Nairobi, London, Barcelona, Cairo,  Johannesburg, Detroit...the world is small, we believe it is our responsibility to let everyone we work with discover and experience at least a piece of it whenever possible...and be transformed in the process...i believe we have done and will continue to do just that...i look forward to sharing blog posts and pictures throughout our projects...and it would be a pleasure if some of you would stop by from time to time...
